BACKSTORY:

LTCDR Nielsen reached his 50’s with solid plans to spend a last decade or two in a medical facility on Earth. The beginning of the Dominion War found him reassigned to Blue Base instead, on account of previous involvement with classified research that accelerated accreditation. Nielsen was supposed to be replaced by the time the Missouri launched officially. His voice is a surprising deep bass that he uses as an amateur opera singer. The Dane is noted from crewmates for fishy tastes in food.
